My own interpretation of the final moments of the film with Paola: Marcello's typewriter has been the object of their bonding -- and in her final, wordless, perhaps tragic, exchange with him over the forlorn estuary, she is miming typing -- asking if he's continued on with his writing. He doesn't understand and with a careless gesture of his arms (almost a mocking remembrance of the Christ images we saw in the first sequence of the film) relinquishes his soul to the bleak dawn.
